FF100 - 056 Breakfast
Title: Not The Best Start To The Day
Prompt: 056 Breakfast
Rogues: Janson, Tycho, Hobbie, Wedge, Inyri (mentioned)
Summary: The Fab Four eat breakfast and read the sludgenews.

Janson set down his mug of caf. “So then, the clerk actually has the audaxity…”

“Audacity,” Tycho corrected, not looking up from the news reports he was reading.

“Yeah, that,” Janson said, “To actually insinuate that I wouldn’t be able to afford the necklace. Just because a guy keeps his paper creds crumpled in little balls in his pockets doesn’t mean he doesn’t have enough to pay for anything over ten creds.”

Hobbie continued to stare at his breakfast, stirring his cereal absentmindedly. “Is the story over now?”

“Is it really that boring of a story?” Janson asked. While he knew it wasn’t up to his usual standards of entertainment, it certainly was more interesting than half of Hobbie’s stories, not to mention anything that ever came out of Wedge’s mouth.

“Well, Wedge is writing a report, Tycho’s reading the news, and I’m stuck playing with my food because I don’t have anything else to distract my attention,” Hobbie replied. “Although you trying to use your word-of-the-day calendar’s vocabulary at breakfast certainly does play into the boring factor.”

“Well, I could tell you the story of the dream I had during squadron sim training the other day using just two syllable words,” Janson suggested.

“I knew he slept during missions,” Wedge said, not looking up from his datapad. With his spare hand, he reached over and picked up his mug of caf.

“Not to be the bearer of bad news,” Tycho said, setting down his reading material and changing the subject, “But have you seen this week’s Coruscant Enquirer, Wes?”

Now that was an odd question. “No.” Janson paused, “You actually read the Enquirer?” He knew Luke and Wedge both did - supposedly, Luke even had a subscription - but they were almost always featured in it. Just last week, the Enquirer reported that Luke had tried to kill Wedge when he discovered the famed New Republic general in bed with his sister. Why it wasn’t Han defending Leia’s honor, Janson would never know. He assumed it was because Luke was more interesting to the Enquirer’s readers than Solo. Luke, after all, was single, not married with three children.

“I keep my eye on what they’re writing. Every now and then they bring me into the torrid lives of the New Republic’s finest. Last month, I had to stage an intervention to prevent Wedge from killing himself,” Tycho remarked. “You and Hobbie also had supporting roles in that piece.” He sipped his caf. “Of course, my favorite Enquirer article was the one they wrote about a year ago on how I was a secret Imperial spy. Whoever wrote that one actually did some work and managed to get their hands on reports NRI made on me back when the squadron was reformed, and they pulled up the transcripts of my trial for Horn’s murder. Parts of those documents were quoted verbatim.” Even though he tried to keep his voice at an even tempo, it was impossible to miss the anger and the hurt that crept into it. Tycho took another sip of his caf, probably in an attempt to hide what he thought about the sludgenews’ interest in him.

“They actually wrote that?” Hobbie asked, his cereal forgotten.

“Yes, they did. It was right after Wedge’s wedding. I suppose I was too visible as Wedge’s best man and they decided I made a great target,” Tycho replied.

“Yeah, they tend to talk about me when I’ve been in the legitimate news. It’s like being seen by the general public suddenly makes you interesting,” Hobbie said. “I try really, really hard to be the most boring person in the galaxy when I’m at any sort of public event.” He returned to playing with his breakfast. “At least no one really believes the trash the Enquirer prints.”

“After the Imperial spy story came out, some woman verbally attacked my wife in the supermarket because she believed it,” Tycho told them. The hand he’d been resting on the table curled into a fist.

A bad feeling started to form in Janson’s stomach. “Tycho, you’d asked me if I’d seen this week’s issue…”

Tycho picked up his reading material and passed it to Janson. “Half way down the page.”

Janson let his eyes scan down until he found a holograph of himself and Inyri Forge entering a restaurant. “Oh no.” This could not be good. “If the Force loves me, this is going to be about how Inyri and I are secretly married.”

“The Force hates you,” Tycho told him.

This was definitely not good. Janson began to read the article and nearly choked on the first sentence. He glanced up. “Has Inyri seen this?”

“I doubt it,” Tycho said. “It’s the new issue. I picked it up on my way in to work this morning.”

Janson returned to reading the article. It just got worse after the first sentence.

“Judging by the backstory work the author put in, it’s probably the same woman who wrote the piece on me,” Tycho told him.

“They don’t put their names on the articles?” Hobbie asked.

“Not anymore. Last year, a celebrity that was targeted by the Enquirer attacked the author who wrote the article about her with an umbrella. After that, they just listed the writers in the ‘staff’ box on the first page,” Wedge explained. “There’s even a line about preserving the safety of their writing staff.”

“It scares me that you know this, Wedge,” Hobbie said.

“Me too,” Wedge admitted. “You’ve read this week’s issue, Tych. Who did I supposedly seduce now?”

“This week, your big story involved an illegal spice smuggling ring. Airen Cracken is also a member of your spice-gang and the reason the two of you are so cold to each other in public is because you’re trying to be inconspicuous about your little side business,” Tycho explained.

Janson slammed the holomag onto the table. “But don’t worry about your public sex life, Wedge. They’re also reporting you got it on with my girlfriend.”

“Supposedly, the only person in the galaxy with a more active sex life than me is Luke,” Wedge said calmly. “No one is going to believe I slept with Inyri any more than they believed I slept with Princess Leia.” He paused, “Why does the Enquirer even care about Inyri? She isn’t exactly the most memorable person in the squadron. I doubt that you could find an average citizen on the street who has even heard of her.”

“I took her as my date to that thing at the Tanaab embassy two weeks ago,” Janson said. “The holonews did a big feature on it – the awards ceremony, not who my date was – complete with interviews.” He’d gone ahead and been his normal, charming self in the interviews. That in itself was probably enough to attract the attention of the sludgenews.

“That’d do it,” Hobbie said. He looked at the holomag. “How bad is it?”

“Let’s just say that the part where Inyri sleeps with Wedge to get into the Rogues is the good part,” Janson told him. He leaned forward. “She cannot see this. It’ll kill her.”

Wedge frowned, “Well, the article is buried somewhere in the middle of the issue. And maybe she doesn’t read the Enquirer.” He looked at Janson. “If you think it would help, I can issue a statement saying that I haven’t slept with Inyri, but a public denial usually just makes the people believe this garbage more.”

“Just ask Luke,” Tycho added.

Wedge nodded. “About a year and a half ago, one of these holomags reported that Mara Jade was having Luke’s baby. Afterwards, Luke made a public statement which denied everything in the article. Most people believed that if Jade really wasn’t having his child, he’d have just kept his mouth shut. The next week, practically every sludgenews holomag was reporting that Jade was staying on Myrkr until after the baby was born, and then she’d be sending it to live with some nice couple on a backwater planet because Luke had decided to take up with Callista Ming again.”

“So there’s nothing I can do to stop this,” Janson said, feeling frustrated. “I’m just supposed to sit back and let all of Coruscant think my girlfriend’s been with half of the galaxy.”

“More or less,” Tycho told him. “It will blow over when the next issue comes out. If you don’t give them any reaction, they get bored and go back to following Luke around the galaxy.”

“Actually, I have an idea that can help right now.” Hobbie spoke up, pushing his breakfast tray away from him. “But it’s going to require Wedge to be a really good friend.”

“I am not going to try to seduce Princess Leia,” Wedge said quickly. “Even if it were all part of a big deception, it would really hurt Iella.”

“I don’t think that’s what Hobbie has in mind,” Tycho told him. “Go ahead, Hobbs.”

“Well, what if Wedge calls a press conference and denies selling spice?” Hobbie suggested. “No one would care what else was in the Coruscant Enquirer this week because they’d all be too busy investigating Wedge’s illegal business ventures.”

“Not to mention Airen Cracken’s involvement in the illegal business ventures,” Tycho said, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “And knowing Cracken, he won’t be able to call a press conference to deny his involvement fast enough, which will just escalate the whole thing to an even higher level.”

“Of course, Wes will owe Wedge a huge favor,” Hobbie pointed out.

“Hell, I’ll turn my Lt. Kettch doll over to Wedge if he pulls this off,” Janson said. He noticed Wedge, Hobbie, and Tycho all staring at him. “What?”

“You’re really going to turn over Lt. Kettch to Wedge?” Hobbie asked.

“Now that is love,” Tycho added.

Janson scowled. “I don’t love her. I just don’t want her to get hurt because she’s with me.”

“Sure, Wes,” Tycho said, “Just keep telling yourself that.”

Wedge grinned. “You know, I’d do it just to irk Cracken, but getting control of Lt. Kettch just makes the pot that much sweeter.” He picked up his datapad and tapped a few keys. “Looks like I have a free hour at 1000.”

“Perfect time for a press conference,” Tycho said.

Wedge’s grin got larger. “My thoughts exactly.”

I wrote this a year ago but for some reason never posted it. hmm. *shrugs*

Very fun! So many little moments I could quote back to you, but I'd probably crash the LiveJournal with the size of my comment. I like! :)
