    Christmas
The food: Turkey and stuffing, cranberry sauce, sausages, roast potatoes, sprouts, glazed carrots and parsnips, pudding, and chocolate cake.

The loot: several tree ornaments, chocolate, Doctor Who collector cards, new pyjamas, Half-blood Prince DVD, a book of Bible study notes, more chocolate, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and What I Saw and How I Lied.

The electricity remained on, fortunately, and it is now raining slightly -- hopefully enough to melt the ice on the cables before it turns to sleet. My dad had to go over to the vet this morning with a sheep that randomly got pneumonia, so we had to hold off opening the presents till this afternoon, but it all worked out in the end.

    Christmas work
I had a good day at work (where I work everyone always cooks something and the nursing home provides us with a free meal, so I'm basically stuffed with sweetie goodness). Midway through the shift we all found out that one of our fellow nurses died today in a horse fire after coming off a night shift. It was on 7 news, so if you're near Toowoomba, you might have seen the segment (here's a short article). Horrible for the family :(.

So, browsing through Amazon's selection of $5 mp3 albums, I have found that Bryan Adams's 1987 album 'Cuts Like A Knife' is classified as "classic rock." My little sister had that album on cassette when it was new. Now it's classic rock and in mp3 format. That's just not right. :P

You have got to be effing kidding me. This piece of objectifying, condescending, sexist garbage won not only Best Action but Audience Choice in Atom's SW Fan Film Challenge? Seriously? I don't care if it's a parody of those crappy Axe products or not. It's flat out, infuriatingly offensive. Screw you, Atom voters. And dream on. Because no, two hot women are not going to fight over you at first sight, in a bar, using lightsabers, and being disrobed bit by bit for you to ogle and snap cell phone photos of them while you drink beer. But if you quit being the sort of jackass that would vote for this trash, you might someday attract the attention of a real woman - not to mention, you know, making the world a slightly better place. We have enough jackasses already, thanks.

Star Wars: Retold (By Someone Who Hasn't Seen It), on the other hand, was pretty funny. And if that's the George Lucas Selects award winner, then the Great Flanneled One has a decent sense of humor about himself. Good for you, George. That helps make up for the poor dialogue. :P

    Christmas with Family
    Tonight before dinner:

    Me:  What's wrong?

Dad:  Nothing.  Just... feeling very grateful this Christmas.

Me:  Aww, the Grinch's heart grew 3 times that day.

    Dad:  Oh shut up.

And OH MY GOD.  MY MOM suggested that we have wine with dinner.

    MOM.

    SUGGESTED WINE.

    Hell froze over.

Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, Mele Kalikimaka, Vesele Vanoce!

Whoever paid for my account, thank you.  I seriously didn't think anyone would, so I was posting it mostly out of humor.  But thank you.

    Looks like a white Christmas
Still more or less snowed in; freezing fog all day. The branches of trees are encased in ice; my father sent my little brother out to break the small saplings loose before they snapped under the weight. My Facebook page is full of friends travelling home to Ireland, hoping that they'll make it and cheering when they do.

The electricity has flickered out a couple of times over the last few days; ice on the wires. Hopefully it will last until we get the turkey cooked tomorrow. We have spent the last day and a half baking, and the cake tin situation is a lot healthier than it was yesterday. Presents are all wrapped and underneath the tree.

Merry Christmas to all of you who celebrate it!

Merry Christmas/Happy Celebration of Your Choice all!

It's mostly been fun being home. Siblings still fight, but not nearly as much as they did once upon a time. University has been good to little brother.

My father keeps insisting that Lorne Green was the bestest Adama evah. Head!Bill has been unimpressed. It didn't stop me from introducing the siblings to BSG though. Gwenna thinks the mini is a little slow paced but it's picked up. Not screaming CYLON! at the Final Five is most difficult though. She's decided Starbuck is a Cylon because she annoys her. Pretty sure that's not how it works. :p

My secret Santa fic is over 2000 words and I haven't finished it yet. Why couldn't my person have requested a short piece of fluff? Instead it's the longest I've written in ages. :p

Shannon came over last night. We were going to go for a walk, but it was pouring rain so we watched Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog. The whole family got a kick out of that. Which... says something about my family.

There's no 10 PM Mass tonight, so we're going to the the 7 PM. Which is going to be... squishy.

    Christmas wishes
I haven't been on the net because I've had a sudden mad dash of work. This is typical. When my computer was getting cleaned and I was dying of bored, did work ring me? Of course not. When I get my computer back and I want to hang around in fandom and play computer games, does work call? Yes.

But money over the holiday season is good money, so I'm working tomorrow and Sunday - and hoping I might get something on Boxing Day if someone calls in sick or wants a day off. Since I'm working tomorrow, my grandmother and I have already unwrapped Christmas presents and had Christmas dinner - consisting of chicken and turkey and then a port-infused trifle (yum).

I'll be posting photos of both our tree with the presents under it and the unwrapped presents themselves. I think I did well with the gift-giving this year. It was, however, really hard to shop this year. I mean, there was so very much on offer but I felt none of it was practical. I did eventually opt for a new mp3 player however! It's practical! No, really ;). Which turned out to be a dud. Ah well, that's what I get for buying Target's cheap brand. Will have to return it now, grr.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, all! *sends love*

How to Fix Your Car Battery
    by Yoni

    1. Upon discovering that your car won't start Monday morning due to a dead battery - despite the fact that you neither left your lights on nor improperly closed a door or anything else that would drain the battery overnight - call your coworker and beg her for a ride to work.

    2. After work that night, use your sister's car to jump start your car. Or at least try.

    3. An hour later, when all that's changed is that your dome light comes on, call your father.

    4. An hour after that, when all that's changed is that now your radio comes on, have a small emotional breakdown in the bathroom and give up for the night.

    5. Make your sister, conveniently off work that day, take you to work in the morning, then come get you mid-afternoon and take you to Wal-mart so you can buy a battery. Be sure to spiral into the depths of crankiness upon discovering that, of course, your car requires the most expensive battery Wal-mart carries.

    6. Make handy friend come over with her wrenches. Change out batteries. Blink in surprise when the positive battery terminal more or less crumbles in your hand when you pull it off the battery post, because it's so corroded. That would explain a few things.

    7. Try to start car with new battery. When it doesn't work, decide that the battery terminal is the real problem and put the old battery back in your car, hoping you can get your $75 back from Wal-mart. Resign yourself to calling a tow service in the morning.

    8. Learn from your father that battery terminals are actually fairly easy to replace, have another (completely inexplicable this time) emotional breakdown, and make new plans to buy battery terminal tomorrow and figure out how to put it on all by yourself. Also learn that your battery is at least five years old and thus on its last legs anyway, so you might as well keep the new one.

    9. Buy battery terminal, wrenches, and tackle car. Take out old battery and put new one back in. Examine corroded battery terminal and notice it's connected to more than just the battery cable and that the standard terminal you bought at the auto parts store isn't going to work.

    10. Call father. Call Nissan dealer. Learn that, indeed, the standard terminal will not work because you need one that can hook to the fuse link. Prepare to use pliers to hold what's left of battery terminal against battery post long enough for sister to start car so you can take it to the Nissan dealer.

    11. On whim, try to start car before sister gets home from haircut. Rejoice when, by some miracle, it actually starts. As you have no idea what's different now from when you tried to start it with the new battery last night, decide God just loves you today and call it a Christmas miracle.

    12. Drive to Nissan dealer and make them put on a new battery terminal. Because you forgot your book in your excitement over a functioning car, be forced to watch Dog the Bounty Hunter and Keeping Up with the Kardashians on the waiting room television.

    13. Drive fully functioning car with new battery and battery terminal home. Promptly devour curry leftovers, as you forgot to eat lunch.

And now you can fix your car battery!

Quark is purr-snoring. The cuteness of that just does me in every time. <3

And TPM is not just as bad as I remember it being. It's worse. Mandy and I are both watching from our respective homes and texting back and forth at key moments. My favorites from Mandy so far: "The crappiness is like badly written quicksand" and "Finally had to mute it. Curse you, George". Mocking one's fandom is a underrated sport, I tell you.

Man Walks To Michigan Diner With 5-inch Knife In His Chest, Calls 911, Then Orders Coffee

I've spent quite a few years working in food service. I've seen some really weird and disgusting things. I've dealt with customers who were sick, drunk, high, and who couldn't be bothered to take their tongue out of their partner's mouth long enough to say "Two for non-smoking." I have seen customers choke, faint, and have strokes and heart attacks. I'm not overly squeamish, and I tend to be pretty calm in stressful situations. But if I had been working when this man had come in, I don't think I'd have stopped shaking for hours afterward. I'm shivering right now, just having read the tiny article. Props to him for staying calm, but seriously, OMG.

My mother's storage arrangements never cease to astonish me
I just opened a promisingly hefty cake tin, and found it to contain cassette tapes rather than anything edible.

Time to go and bake something, methinks.

ETA: There are, I have discovered, mince pies. They are being stored (where else?) in the bread bin.

    Christmas time is...here? I guess?
    Christmas update:

It is so weird to me that Christmas is Friday. Christmas feels like it should be three weeks away - that's how far I've settled into "Christmas spirit." I mean, I decorated the weekend after Thanksgiving and have been playing Christmas music when I think about it, and we even had a gorgeous, perfect snow. But...Christmas feels like it's next month. I even tried to do cheesy Christmas things on Saturday, but my city didn't cooperate and my Former Roommate and I wound up watching Mystery Science Theater instead. I mean, a great evening, but I wanted twinkle lights and hot cider and maybe animatronic reindeer.

On the other hand, I've gotten several awesome presents already, spent all day Sunday with fabulous people, and have, like, seven hours of work left this week. Then my sister and I load up the car (mine, hopefully, if it's functioning by then) with presents and the dog and head out for a week and a half of vacation. Should be marvelous.
